South Africa is one of the World’s foremost touring destinations with a diversity of attractions, sights and activities – a world in one country. It offers a spectacular variety of unspoilt scenery, world-renowned Game Reserves and National Parks. The breathtaking beauty of the coastline and beaches, the sweeping grandeur of the African scenery coupled with very fertile land and a range of climate which enables it to grow abundant crops and make this country a dream destination for anyone.

This Huttons Tour seeks to provide an overview of South Africa and includes key attractions. We will explore life on game reserves, the farm, the breath-taking landscape and in the city. Our itinerary includes five game drives in search of the Big Five – lion, rhino, leopard, elephant and buffalo with three overnights in private Game Lodges. After the game drives in the evening, we will sit around the fire in a boma (wooden enclosure) and share our experiences of the day providing a true sense of the African bush. We also have a whole day in Kruger National Park travelling in 4x4 vehicles – a new addition for this 2023 tour!

Pretoria is also known as “Jacaranda City” due to 70,000 Jacaranda trees which come into bloom in Autumn. We will be based in the town of Belfast! and from here we will have travel to the Leeubank farm to where Gerrit Roos farms approximately 4000 German Merino sheep along with Tuli and Pinzgauer cattle breeds. The Voortrekker Monument which guards the entrance to Pretoria is a looming granite structure commemorating the Great Trek of 1834 –1840 that opened the country’s interior for white occupation. Union Buildings and the famous Nelson Mandela statue are also in the itinerary, Union Buildings are the administrative headquarters of the South African government. We will then return to Johannesburg airport for our afternoon flight to Port Elizabeth.

On our way to Cape Town, known affectionately as the Mother City, we will travel the scenically stunning Garden Route a 50-mile long rocky shore, lush forest flora and a wealth of bird life which make up the Tsitsikamma National Park, South Africa’s first marine reserve. The Dutch led by Jan van Riebeeck set up the first European settlement at Cape Town in 1652 as a shipping supply route. Here you’ll find the oldest buildings in South Africa, the Castle of Good Hope and the country’s oldest gardens. We’ll take a cable car ride to the top of Table Mountain 1000 metres above sea level. On the mountain slopes lie the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens and from the Victoria and Albert waterfronts you can take (optional) boat trip to Robben Island to visit former prison now a museum.

With a 4-night stay in Cape Town we finish our sightseeing and visits around Stellenbosch well known for its university and Cape Dutch buildings, followed by a visit to the beautiful town of Franschhoek established by French Huguenots in 1680 and visit the Huguenot Monument. A visit to Boulders Penguin Colony in Simons Town which is home to a unique land-based colony of African Penguins, one of only a few in the world. With stimulating visits to family farms, some of them the most successful livestock and fruit farms in South Africa together with numerous cultural experiences, including a visit to the Groote Schur Hospital where Dr Chris Barnard performed the world’s first heart transplant on 3rd December 1967.
